Performance Initialization

As noted in the glossary, performanceInitialization is:

the process whereby the parameters for the performance calculation are defined. In order, the input required is:

See also performanceCalculation.

These queries will be discussed in the order in which they appear.

Input Starting Date

The user may select a starting date for the calculation, which must be a priced date. The performance calculation will, essentially, determine the fate of a sum of money invested on this date. The default date displayed initially by the dateInputBox is the accountOpeningDate of the activePortfolio.

Input Ending Date

The ending date of the performance calculation must also be a priced date. In order that the computations are available quickly, it is recommended that the period defined by the starting and ending dates should not be greater than is useful for the desired analysis.

Choose the Index

Index data is maintained on the HIMIPref™ server. Indices not maintained on the server will be added by Hymas Investment Management upon a user's request that includes a publicly available source of data. As noted in the glossary the indexSelectionBox is:

An input box allowing the selection of one or more indices from the defined list. The text in the selection box is the indexName field of indexNamesType.

To select an index, highlight the indexName and click the "Select" button; the number of indices selected and their names will then be listed in the upper panel of the "indexSelectionBox". When all desired indices have been selected, click the "OK" button to accept the list.

Choose the subject of the performance calculation

Two possibilities exist for users: Portfolios and Issues. Indicate your choice via one of the two radio buttons and click "OK" to accept your choice.

indicate whether the calculation is pre-tax or post-tax

"Pre-Tax" calculations are standard - very few people will be familiar enough with "Post-Tax" analysis for the latter choice to produce meaningful numbers. Note that virtually all Index data is reported on a Pre-Tax basis. Click the "Yes" button to perform a Pre-Tax calculation.

Indicate whether or not all issues are to be examined

This question is asked only when "Issues" has been selected previously (as opposed to "Portfolios"). Normally, one will click "Yes" to perform the calculation on all instruments priced throughout the period. If you do not wish to select all issues, the multipleStringSelectionBox will appear; choices are the ticker symbols of all issues that are listed on both the start- and end-date.

Indicate which month-end date should serve as a starting point for quarterly and annual periods.

Quarterly and Annual data may be calculated using any month-end within the period as a starting point; e.g., it is posssible to for the performance evaluation to commence with a November month-end, but to have quarterly & annual data calculated commencing in December.
